“Mistress Mine Well May You Fare”

Thomas Morley (1557-1602)

Mistress Mine Well May You Fare
Richard Jacobowski

Though remembered primarily as a master of the English madrigal, Thomas Morley published a superb, singular collection of songs for voice and lute in 1600 titled The First Book of Ayres. “Mistress Mine, We’ll May You Fare” stands as a mini-masterpiece within this collection. The song balances a prevailing, melancholy minor harmony with sudden, vibrant major thirds that spice up the modal landscape. This performance features mezzo-soprano Barbara Rearick.
