Federico Torroba composed the multi-volume Castles of Spain in close connection with Andrés Segovia. The “Romance de los Pinos” was integrated into the collection under the title Montemayor, named after the historic castle in Córdoba, Spain.

Torroba captures the castle’s ancient atmosphere through a lyrical, singing melody floating over gently rolled chords and warm, impressionistic harmonies. Having spent a memorable week studying with John Williams in Córdoba, this piece will always transport me back to that wonderful time.
