Federico Mompou (1893-1987)
Federico Mompou composed the Suite Compostelana in 1962 and dedicated the work to Andrés Segovia. It is a six-movement suite that invokes the sounds and essence of Santiago de Compostela in Galicia, Spain. Mompou opens this movement with haunting modal scales and resonant, bell-like chords that mimic the ringing carillons of the ancient city.
To me, this prelude slowly unveils the mysteries of the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela and its magical pilgrimage route.
