Queen Elizabeth’s Galliard
John Dowland (1553-1626)
Derived from the 1610 collection A Varietie of Lute Lessons, this composition serves as John Dowland’s dedication to his queen and benefactor, Queen Elizabeth I. The vibrant, triumphant 6/8 passages have always been a favorite of mine to play. It also holds a nostalgic value for me, as I recall performing this piece for my high school English class during a project on Elizabethan poetry.
